A few examples of suicidal statements:
• "I don't care if I live or die."
• "I want to kill myself."
• "I hate life."
• "The world will be better off without me."
• "When I'm gone they'll forgive me."
Most suicidal persons talk about their intentions to at least one other person.
If he or she has a plan and/or method of committing suicide, the person is considered "actively suicidal."
Get help immediately. Call 911 and take the person to the Emergency Room.
Some of the more subtle signs include:
- Withdrawing from family or friends
- Giving away prized possessions
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Gaining or losing and significant amount of weight
- Facing a perceived "failure" with despair
- Behaving recklessly, as if their life no longer matters
- Abusing alcohol or drugs
- Being the target of abuse or bullying
- Being unable to concentrate
- Feeling excessive guilt or shame
- Feeling hopelessness and helplessness
- Being unable to imagine a brighter future
- Feeling emotional or physical pain is intolerable
- Being unable to think of a better solution
